Proton Pump Inhibitors

Proton pump inhibitor (PPI).  inhibits gastric acid secretion by
inhibiting the K+/H+ pump (potassium pump). PPIs also have some effect for inhibiting Helicobacter organisms in the stomach when administered with antibiotics. Decomposed in the acid environment of the stomach. Oral absorption is decreased if administered with food. Formulations are designed to protect from acid to improve oral absorption (e.g., some capsules contain bicarbonate) and should not be modified (i.e., crushing of capsules) or the stability will be compromised.
